This is the first case of TB caused by this bacterium detected in a fox in the Iberian Peninsula.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The fox was found blind and malnourished. Subsequently, the animal was sent to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/mediambient.gencat.cat\/ca\/05_ambits_dactuacio\/patrimoni_natural\/fauna-autoctona-protegida\/centres-fauna-salvatge-animals-ferits\/centres-recuperacio-departament\/centre-fauna-vallcalent\/\">Centre de Fauna de Vallcalent<\/a><\/em> (Lleida, Catalonia) and, after a clinical evaluation, the animal was euthanized and sent <a href=\"https:\/\/weh.cat\/ca\/sefas-cat\"><em>Servei d\u2019Ecopatologia de Fauna Salvatge<\/em> (SEFaS)<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uab.cat\"><em>Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona<\/em><\/a> to carry out a necropsy. After the necropsy, lesions from systemic TB infections were observed. The infection was later confirmed by histopathology with Distemper virus co-infection. Subsequently, the samples were transferred to the <a href=\"https:\/\/irtacat-my.sharepoint.com\/personal\/bernat_perez_irta_cat\/Documents\/bperez\/papers%20BNT\/Altres\/C&amp;C\/FoxTB\/ww.irta.cat\">IRTA<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cresa.cat\/blogs\/sociedad\/\">CReSA<\/a>\u2019s Biocontainment Unit where the microbiological culture was carried out and the <em>Mycobacterium caprae<\/em>\u00a0bacterium was isolated.<\/p>\n\n<p>In collaboration with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/home\/\">US Department of Agriculture\u2019s National Veterinary Services (NVLS-USDA)<\/a>, a\u00a0whole genome sequencing study of this\u00a0<em>M. caprae<\/em>\u00a0strain isolated from the fox was performed and analysed alongside other\u00a0<em>M. caprae<\/em>\u00a0strains isolated from domestic and wild animals around Catalonia. The results showed a close phylogenetic relationship of the isolated\u00a0<em>M. caprae<\/em>\u00a0from the fox with those obtained from a cattle herd in the same municipality a few months earlier, indicating transmission by direct or indirect contact between cattle and the fox.
